There is always plenty off competitive rivalry between lure manufacturers at the best of times, but things just stepped up a gear for two of the biggest brands in the sport as Savage Gear and Westin have gone into battle over ducklings !
Yes you did read that right….Savage Gear and Westin have both announced brand new lures at virtually the same time and both of them are baby duckling surface lures aimed at catching mean old pike.
The Contenders in The Great Duck Battle
- Westin’s Danny the Duck
Westin’s Danny the Duck is 14cm long and weighs 44g. When retrieved slowly it wobbles along on the surface realistically, but give it more crank and the diving lip integrated into the beak pulls it down to around 1.5m max. The lure has a solid plastic body combined with soft rubber feet and is wired through for durability.
- Savage Gear Suicide Duck
We have a little less information about Mads Grosell’s latest creation as so far the lure has only been publicised on social media. However the lure looks to be a very similar size to Westin’s Danny, but with a couple of key differences which might just see it win the battle of the beaks. Westin’s duck is armed with two standard and fairly large trebles that hang under the lure, meaning that it will be no good for fishing amongst surface weed or lily pads, which is traditionally very good topwater territory for pike fishing. The Savage Gear Suicide Duck on the other hand has a very neat clipped on top treble that sits on top of the ducks back, which means that if you remove the belly treble, you will be able to fish the lure relatively weedlessly. We also like the spinning feet of Savages design, which will create a load of froth and churn, just like a real life panic stricken cute little baby duckie. We also like the real feathers that Mads has included to mask the hooks.
Here at Lure Tour we are big admirers of Westin Lures, but to us it looks like Savage may have the edge in this Duck War. At the end of the day it will be the pike that decide…we just can’t wait to get our hands on some samples so we can see what they think !
